In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In vitro fertilization, commonly known as IVF, is a service offered for women who have trouble conceiving naturally. Dr. Melnick founded New York City’s first private outpatient IVF facility in 1983. He uses unique IVF protocols that require less medication, which is much more cost-effective for patients while still providing comparable results to more common IVF approaches.
Ovarian rejuvenation is a new procedure that involves using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in the ovaries to potentially stimulate natural hormone productions and restore fertility. Dr. Melnick was one of the first physicians in the United States to offer ovarian rejuvenation, and co-authored the first scholarly article published on the use of PRP in gynecology.
Additional Infertility Services
Dr. Melnick also offers several other infertility services that may be recommended in conjunction with IVF treatment, as well as treatment for common conditions that affect fertility.
Hypothyroidism is a common type of hormone imbalance, in which the body does not produce enough of the thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism can lead to a variety of symptoms that affect a patient’s health and quality of life. It can also cause fertility problems in women. Today, many physicians rely solely on blood tests to diagnose hypothyroidism and use less effective synthetic medications to treat it. Dr. Melnick believes that the patient’s symptoms reveal more information than the results of a blood test, as many patients have symptoms even though blood tests show they are in a “normal” range. He also uses natural thyroid medications, which tend to be more effective in alleviating symptoms.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a form of hypothyroidism caused by an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid gland. With this type of hypothyroidism, diet can be just as important as medication in controlling the autoimmune response.
Treating Hypothyroidism with Telemedicine
Hypothyroidism is an ideal condition to treat via telemedicine, as a patient’s symptoms are the best indicator as to whether or not treatment is working. Dr. Melnick has offered telemedicine consultations and treatment for hypothyroidism for over 5 years. This option is very convenient for patients who lead very busy lifestyles, as well as those who live out of town and have not had success with hypothyroid treatment locally.
